There are many times in life whether it be in your personal or work life where we have to make a decision to either take the easy way out or choose the longer, yet better way when reacting and making decisions. While we often take for granted these choices, we really create our own destiny and future through the smallest, yet most important decisions. You may believe a small action will not have a larger effect on your life, but eventually, all the small things will add up and become a part of who you are and the path you have chosen.
A simple real-life example would be to imagine that you are taking a test at work in order to get the promotion that you have been wanting. At some point during the test, there is time for you to get a look at another colleague’s answers, without getting caught. This is where true integrity steps in. You either choose the easy way out and look at another’s answers without doing the work yourself, or you take the longer, but right way and do your test on your own. You may be thinking that this example would never apply to you and that it is only a small life decision that wouldn’t matter overall, but in reality, it is incredibly important. You cannot be a good coworker, friend or role model if you are not honest at all times. Doing the right thing includes aiming to stay truthful whenever and wherever you are, even when no one is looking.
Overall, doing the right thing isn’t always as simple as it sounds. As we mentioned, life has many ups and downs that often make it more difficult for us to choose the right path. In these situations, we have to take a step back and think of the person we want to be and how we want to be perceived by others. Once we have decided who we want to be, it becomes easier to make those decisions. Whether these decisions are small or large, they matter.
